Grooming Your Puppy

Starting your puppy on his grooming program at an early age will teach him how to behave and be at ease during this time. It is also a wonderful bonding process for the both of you.

If you find your puppy/dog is getting upset during his grooming process at any time, just talk to him/her VERY soft & calmly and pet him/her very gently. Then he/she should start to settle down.

I find this method to be VERY helpful.

1.) First choose a gentle tearless shampoo that will not irriate his eyes while washing his face. I use only Bio-Groom products on the dogs and puppies here, It is a natural product and there are no harsh chemicals in it. The Bio-Groom products comes in many different varities and most of the shampoos and conditioners are concentrated so one bottle will make several depending on the product selected.

2.) While washing your puppy's or dogs face be careful not to get water in his nose or ears. If using a spray nosel, jsut take it along side of his nose spraying downward.

3.) When drying your puppy or dog be careful not to get it too hot for his tender skin. If you are using your hair dryer to him him put you hand where the heat is on his skin and if it is too hot for your hand it is obviously too hot for his skin. If this happens check your heat setting if it is on warm then just back the hair dryer away just a bit. You may use the high speed setting but be sure to use the warm heat setting. If he has a long coat you will want to brush it during the drying process, this will help seperate the hair and make the drying process faster.

4.) When trimming his nails be very careful not too cut too close, this is everyone fear, understandably. Once he is cut too close he is very hesitant to let you do it again. Just incase this happens keep some bleed stop handy or you may use flour if you do not have this on hand. Clear nails are definitely easier to to see than the black nails. But as a general rule just clip off the hook of the nail, that way you can be pretty sure that you are not cutting back too close.

5.) Shaving his pads (the hair that grows between his toes on the bottom of his feet) you may use a small battery powered hair trimmer. You can purchase them at your local pet supply store for about 20.00. This will keep his feet nice and tidy.

6.) Top off his grooming with a nice smelling fragrance made especially for dogs.

7.) Please make sure that he is completly dry before letting him go outside to play, especially in cooler

weather.
